November 2005 - Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Rio is a weird blend of the old world and a wonderful and playful modern asthetic like these old buildings and really fun phone boths
Rio's geography is amazing! It really is a major reason to go! OH, and the first night we were in Rio, we went to the beach to watch the sunset, since we were right off the beach. When the sun cleared the horizon, everyone on the beach cheered! It was wonderful!
I LOVE CARIOCAS!
This is me (right) and my travel buddy Joseph Cavalieri (an amazing glass artist, CAVAglass.com) sitting on the steps of an old estate in the Santa Teresa area of Rio. It is an area developing with artists and such, similar to Williamsburg or D.U.M.B.O. just with less agressive Real Estate Developers.
This picture and the next were taken at this wonderful cafe in Santa Teresa. Bet it is a hopping place in the evenings!
More in Santa Teresa
A little grocery store in Santa Teresa
A wonderful old bus that was transformed into a fruit market! Hmmm, could i go mobil with my studio? hmm
This was a wonderful part of Santa Teresa... probably my favorite part. I got to meet Saleron.
He is the man responsible for one of the most famous pieces of public art in Rio which has appeared in a lot of videos and magazines. In fact it was in Snoop Dogg & Pharrell's video "Beautiful". AND actually right in this photo, he and I are sitting on this very famous piece of art.
Just loved this sign for the Carmen Miranda Museum (see the 2nd one down).
And this is Raquel, she is a Carioca (native from Rio) and was our tour guide. She was amazing! I could not recommend connecting with a native enough. She knew things we couldn't, including real people politics from before Brasil was a democracy and THE REAL places to get your groove on with the people.
Me and Carmen. Come on give her love!
Does this mean Brazilian men are angels? Of course not! There was a car insurance commercial being shot in Centro. And all the people in it who were insured had a Brazilian shirtless male angel. Hmmm, what insurance plan is that?
In Centro was another example of Rio's modern taste as well. It is the Catedral Metropolitana.
I was in Rio while it was gearing into its holiday season just like we were in NYC. A holiday tradition, So we were told, is for all Cariocas to visit this tree during the holidays. It is this amazingly huge, floating bit of scafolding that lights up all over at night and looks like some kind of industrial modern stage piece for bjork.
The next 2 images are of the only Oscar Niemeyer building I was able to explore on this trip. It is the Museu de Arte Contemporanea in Niteroi.
Niemeyer was Brasil's Premiere Architect and design the nations capital, Brasilia
